Position Overview
Fenix International is seeking a talented, motivated Fundraising & Development Manager to join our rapidly growing team as we work to bring affordable solar power to emerging markets in Sub-Saharan Africa. The role will entail working closely with the Global Policy, Finance, and Commercial teams, with significant cross-collaboration with our Communications, Product, Credit, and Country Teams to help Fenix develop deep, meaningful relationships with existing and potential donors, policymakers, and other external stakeholders, marry key company priorities with storytelling to develop compelling and fact-driven funding proposals, and identify new opportunities for Fenix to grow with donors. This role will manage the entire end-to-end fundraising and development process, requires skilled relationship building, the ability to represent Fenix at external events, project management, and writing/presentation experience.

This position offers an incredible opportunity to work with a team of business professionals across all of our country offices. Candidates must have a passion for writing, storytelling, research, reaching out to external stakeholders, relationship-building, project management, attention to details, entrepreneurship, renewable energy and sustainable development in Frontier Markets.

You will be based in Kampala, Uganda for the first few months, with potential to be based in another Fenix market in the long-term, working on critical projects with immediate impact and with the opportunity to travel domestically and internationally to understand Fenix’s customer base and stakeholders. This role is a key member of the Global Policy Team, with significant cross-collaboration across other teams at Fenix. Role requires fluency in English and French.

Own Fenix’s grant raising strategy including development, relationship building, writing, iterating & closing innovative, meaningful & catalytic funding with key partners/stakeholders. This includes:

Build meaningful donor, policymaker, and industry relationships

Develop and maintain key stakeholder mapping for the donor and policy space based on Fenix’s funding and growth priorities
Identify, build, and deepen key external relationships
Identify governments (in existing and new markets) that have electrification plans that align with Fenix’s business, assist the Policy Team in building those relationships, and develop proposals and other communications targeted to relevant policymakers
Represent Fenix at external events and to key stakeholders

Represent Fenix at key industry events, such as GOGLA
Help Policy and Marketing teams Identify key conferences and other external events of which Fenix should be a part based on high priority stakeholders present, as well as develop outreach strategies for those stakeholders
Develop compelling funding proposals to help Fenix gain resources to advance its mission

Generate compelling proposals and supporting documents in response to open call for tenders and donor outreach
Conduct research for grants and attend grant/funder workshops, as needed
Develop and maintain grants database, including tracking tender release dates, application close dates, and other key information
Collaborate across various teams, such as Product, Credit, Operations, and Country Teams to understand funding needs, match relevant opportunities, and help find funding for key priorities
Post-award, manage grant pipeline, including monitoring timelines and reporting

Maintain timeline of grant reporting needs and requirements
Create templates and dashboards of key information required in donor reporting
Oversee overall grant reporting process, including developing report narratives, completing required financial results, and collaborating across Fenix global and country teams for additional donor-requested information
Support additional strategic, high-impact initiatives within Global Policy and Finance

Conduct research on government national and rural electrification plans, and identify potential funding or partnership opportunities
Maintain knowledge and updates on significant policy factors in existing and key new markets
Conduct additional policy research, as needed, to support the team
Collaborate with Finance on an external funding forecast and other relevant projects


Outstanding written and verbal communications skills: English and French are a must. Portuguese would be a plus
Proven track record of writing & closing meaningful grant & concessionary funding objectives (i.e. greater than $10M of grant capital raised under your ownership)
Enjoys meeting new people, developing meaningful relationships, and presenting in front of various audiences
A solid team player who is also an independent thinker
A passion for storytelling -- written, verbal, and visual -- balanced with research and analysis
Robust research and analytical skill-set, endless curiosity, and a desire to think outside the box

Experience Requirements

At least 5 - 7 years in a fundraising and development capacity, and deep knowledge of the donor landscape and fundraising processes.

Relevant Bachelor's degree
